1838	12/31	Lin Tse-hsu is appointed Imperial Commissioner to handle port and maritime affairs in Kwangtung
1839	3/10	Lin arrives at Canton.
	4/11	Opuim stocks stored on board 22 hulks and owned by Western and Indian/Parsees contraband traders are seized by order of Lin.
	6/3	The destruction of the seized opium begins at Bogue forts
1842	3/31	Maj. Gen. Henry Eldred Curwen Pottinger in the service of the British East India Company establishes a Provisional Government of Hong Kong. (In essence, the British occupation government since Hong Kong would not officially become a British colony until 1843/4/5.)
	9/29	Treaty of Nanking is signed
	9/6	Treaty of Nanking is assented by Emperor Tao-Kuang
	12/28	Treaty of Nanking is ratified by Queen Victoria
1843	4/5	Hong Kong is constituted as a British colony under the Letter of Patent (The Hong Kong Charter) dated this day. Pottinger is appointed Hong Kong's first Governor.
	6/26	The Legislative Council is established, the members of which will not be appointed until 8/21 (3 official members appointed). The Council will convene for the first time in the following year on 1/11.
1845	4/unk.	The Oriental Bank Corporation opens a branch to become Hong Kong's first bank.
1847	unk./unk.	The Oriental Bank Corporation issued over $56,000 unchartered banknotes to be come Hong Kong's first locally issued banknotes.
1856		Second Opium War
1859	7/19	The Chartered Bank of India, Australia and China opens a branch.
